The Wolf of Snow Hollow is Cheeky Americana

An absurdly funny, dark comic take on small town Americana in the throes of serial murders (possibly perpetrated by a werewolf), The Wolf of Snow Hollow stars writer-director Jim Cummings as John Marshall, a sheriff’s deputy and son to Hollow’s aging chief (Robert Forster). He’s an alcoholic with a short fuse, a chip on his […]

Dreamland, the Dust Bowl, and the Streaming Age

In 2020, streaming is king. And yet, despite so many new releases via Netflix, Amazon, HBO, and premium on-demand outlets, it still feels as if film is currently obfuscated from conversation, from pop culture at large. Blame it on the dwindling monoculture or blame it on the underrated importance (see: marketing benefits) of theatrical, but […]

Greenland, a Moving Ode to First Responders

You would think an apocalyptic disaster film is exactly what we don’t need right now, but Greenland is here to prove us wrong, balancing the inevitable cynicism of end-of-the-world scenarios with an incredible optimism in humanity and our capacity to care for one another. There are plenty of us who would loot storefronts and look […]

From the Archives: The Infiltrators

Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera’s recent film The Infiltrators uses a bold mix of film forms to tell the true story of a group of young undocumented activists who intentionally detain themselves in a South Florida immigration detention facility. Styled as a heist film, Ibarra and Rivera weave together verité footage, testimony, and reenactment to produce a compelling argument against immigration detention. In Diana Ruiz’s interview, Ibarra and Rivera discuss the ways in which The Infiltrators problematizes extractive modes of documentary film and how the project’s requisite reenactment brought about unexpected results. They also discuss the creative and political dimensions of “undocumented storytelling,” which relates to the filmmakers’ enduring commitment to depicting fully dimensional representations of immigrants and Latinx experiences.
